Changes to Interim Visas

Changes to Interim Visas

30/03/25, 11:00 pm

Effective 8 April 2025, Immigration New Zealand will grant work rights to individuals on interim visas who have applied for an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), facilitating quicker employment transitions.

Starting 8 April 2025, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) will implement changes allowing individuals on interim visas to work while awaiting the outcome of their Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) applications. This applies to applicants transitioning from any type of work visa or from a student visa that permits work during term time.

Under the new policy, applicants can commence employment with the employer specified in their AEWV application, enabling a smoother and faster transition into their new roles. Additionally, the time spent working on an interim visa will count towards the work experience requirements for work-to-residence pathways. For those applying for a second or subsequent AEWV, this interim period will also contribute to the maximum continuous stay allowed under the AEWV policy. However, time spent on an interim visa before the first AEWV does not count towards this maximum period.
